We’re back!
Posted on Oct 04, 2008 under Aquaponics, Fish, Fish farming, Off-Grid, Self Sufficiency, Uncategorized, construction | 2 CommentsYes, I know, we wanted to live off-grid, but the property we bought is a little too far off. Now we have finally found an internet provider that can supply us with a decent internet connection, so we’re back online!
These past 2 months have been very eventful, but we are about settled now. The first 4000 liter fish tank has been set up inside the greenhouse. For now it houses goldfish. We’ll have to see how temperatures develop in the greenhouse throughout the winter. I will probably build a shed around the fish tank and connected grow bed and equip it with a grow light to be able to grow some veggies this winter.
Sorry, no pictures at the moment, as the USB cable for the camera is still in one of the unpacked moving boxes…

I to am working on a agri-aquacultue system. My backround is that I have a degree Zoology and have also worked in the concrete resoration business for over 20 years. I live in California and I have relativley mild climate ,but I stil need a greenhouse to raise tropical fish during the winter months. I am currently looking into ferro- cement tanks, but may use shotcrete or gunite instead. I have been working on a poly cultural system based on South American fishes that I have studied in the wild and believe that these aniamals would be far superior to Tilapia or any other fish. I am curious about your design of tanks and would like to find out if you went round or square. Thanks, Paul Rice

Paul, the test tank I have running is a 2 by 2 meters square tank about a meter deep. Its build out of OSB and I used pond liner to make it watertight. I really liked the ease of building this tank and will build my other tanks in the same way, just bigger.
Our greenhouse has 10 by 2 meter planting tables that have concrete paths around them. When removing the planting tables I’m left with a concrete slab with 10 by 2 meter holes in it to hold the fish tanks. Not sure if this is my preferred setup, but thats what we have to work with.
What fish have you been working with?
