We’re back!

Yes, I know, we wanted to live off-grid, but the property we bought is a little too far off. Now we have finally found an internet provider that can supply us with a decent internet connection, so we’re back online!

These past 2 months have been very eventful, but we are about settled now. The first 4000 liter fish tank has been set up inside the greenhouse. For now it houses goldfish. We’ll have to see how temperatures develop in the greenhouse throughout the winter. I will probably build a shed around the fish tank and connected grow bed and equip it with a grow light to be able to grow some veggies this winter.

Sorry, no pictures at the moment, as the USB cable for the camera is still in one of the unpacked moving boxes…

The property hunt is on

view.jpgWith the summer holidays approaching, I think now is the best time to pack our stuff and move, so the kids can transfer to a new school when the new school year starts. We have been searching for a suitable location for a while and I think we have found just the right spot. The property we are looking at has 10.000 square meters of land in the middle of nowhere, the nearest neighbor is about 400 meters down the road, yet all important facilities like doctors, schools and stores are only a few car-minutes away. The property also includes a 340 square meter barn which would be perfect to house the little company we are planning. We have an appointment with the real estate broker next weekend and we are so excited about it that we have trouble sleeping!

Promoting my Blog

Posted on Dec 19, 2007 under Uncategorized | 5 Comments

I’m going a little off-topic here, but part of running a blog, or any kind of website for that matter, is promoting it. Someone pointed out rssHugger to me, a new website that helps bloggers promote their website. The site is a directory of blogs, categorized by subject and currently contains over 400 listings in over 90 categories. So, if you are looking for blogs on any subject be sure to have a look at rssHugger.

I have also added my blogs rss feed to FeedBurner, which lets you track how many people have subscribed to your rss feed. Since adding my feed about 2 weeks ago I have gained 35 feed subscribers. If you are one of them: thanks for subscribing to my feed, I’d love to read your comments on my posts! If you haven’t subscribed yet, you can do so here and be updated on any new posts on my blog.

Welcome to the self-sufficient life blog!

We have decided to leave our city home and start a new life on a farm far away from all the noise and pollution. One thing to consider when moving is job opportunities and after some thinking I have come to the conclusion that life without a regular job could be a feasible alternative.

The time normally spend at a job could be used to work on the land, growing vegetables, fruits and herbs to feed our family of four. We don’t want to go Amish, so being completely self-sufficient will not be possible. There are a few things we don’t want to live without, quite a few actually, meaning we have to make some money.

The amount of money we need depends on how much we can do ourselves. With food undoubtedly being our biggest cost at the moment, that will be the first thing to look at. Growing most of the food should not be a big problem, the only question is: how big a piece of land is needed to be able to grow enough food to survive?

I have started this blog to keep track of my investigations on the subjects of self sufficient life and off-grid living. Over time this blog should grow into valuable resource for myself and anyone else interested in the subjects.
